Et ce, grâce aux " waals". Beaucoup de ces anciens canaux d'irrigation sont encore en service aujourd'hui et conduisent l'eau claire des torrents de montagne et des glaciers jusqu'aux pentes du Sonnenberg. Comme à l'époque, les cours d'eau sont taillés dans la pierre ou le bois et fournissent l'eau nécessaire aux pommeraies et aux jardins du Vinschgau entre avril et septembre.
Le meilleur moment pour découvrir le paysage culturel riche et varié de cette région, pour se plonger dans ses odeurs et ses couleurs particulières, est certainement le printemps. C'est en effet à ce moment-là que toute la magie de la saison se révèle le long des chemins de Waal : pommiers et cerisiers en fleurs, feuilles vert tendre des vignes, fleurs de pissenlit et bien d'autres choses encore s'épanouissent au bord des chemins et confèrent à chaque randonnée un cadre particulier.
Il est difficile de dire quel chemin de Waal dans le Val Venosta est particulièrement recommandé pour une randonnée agréable, car tous ont leur propre charme. Il faut toutefois savoir que le Schludernser Bergwaal et l'Ilswaal à Silandro ont généralement de l'eau dès le mois d'avril, alors que la plupart des autres ne sont en eau qu'à partir du mois de mai.
Dans la région voisine, autour de Merano, on trouve également de très beaux chemins de vals.
