Les châteaux du Tyrol du Sud, restaurés avec amour, servent de restaurants, d'hôtels-châteaux ou de musées et sont ouverts au public. Certains d'entre eux sont encore habités par les châtelains ou utilisés comme résidence d'été.
Le célèbre alpiniste de l'extrême Reinhold Messner vit l'été au château de Juval à Castelbello-Ciardes, à l'entrée du Val Senales. C'est là que se trouve l'un de ses six musées Messner Mountain. Deux autres musées de Messner se trouvent au château de Brunico et au château de Sigmundskron près de Bolzano.
Au sud de Bolzano, autour d'Eppan, on compte un nombre incroyable de 200 châteaux forts, châteaux et manoirs. La zone est ainsi considérée comme la région la plus riche en châteaux d'Europe et offre aux visiteurs, petits et grands, de nombreux buts d'excursion appréciés et des curiosités intéressantes. La randonnée des châteaux d'Eppan est particulièrement recommandée aux familles.

DAN / Fotolia.comL'Institut des châteaux du Tyrol du Sud, fondé en 1963, s'occupe de la conservation des châteaux forts et des châteaux en mains publiques et privées. Outre la documentation professionnelle, la restauration et l'entretien du Trostburg et du château de Taufers, qui sont la propriété de l'Institut des châteaux, l'association s'engage également à sensibiliser ses membres.
L'association bénévole organise des expositions, des séminaires et des congrès sur le thème des châteaux forts et des châteaux. Elle encourage également les publications sur les châteaux forts et la publication de la revue ARX (latin : château fort). Dans ce contexte, une étroite collaboration avec d'autres instituts européens spécialisés dans les châteaux forts revêt une grande importance.
