Avelengo est situé sur un haut plateau ensoleillé au-dessus de Merano, le Tschögglberg, et offre de magnifiques panoramas ainsi qu'un mélange attachant de traditions alpines et de légèreté méditerranéenne.
Le village a donné son nom aux Havelengo. Cette race de chevaux à la crinière blonde se caractérise par un pied sûr, une grande robustesse et un caractère équilibré.
